The title sums up the brilliant insight Foley brings from evolutionary biology to anthropology: All species are unique. The table of contents shows his method of deriving facts about humans from the thoroughly un-unique aspects of their ecological niche: humans as large-bodied mammals, humans as tropical mammals, humans as carnivores, etc. The point of the textbook is that the subject of hominid paleobiology must be that of any other zoological paleo-investigation: To find the derived characters that combine to make the unique pattern of heritage and adaptation we see in the species today.
