McGlasson's book provides a window into the challenges of doing theology within the "mainline churches." While his critique is strident, it should be taken seriously and should be part of a broader discussion of liberation theology's thought and practice within a very wealthy middleclass/upper middle class Christianity in the US. What sounds like anger in McGlasson's book is more likely frustration to the fact that politics (both left and right) have invaded any debate about theology, hermeneutics, or ethics, and any dissent is quickly dismiss when the race/gender/economic class card is played. McGlasson's didactic style can be frustrating, since he raises many questions and leaves it to reader to figure out the answers. However, it does represent a very engaging style.
