Whistling Ghosts and Frozen Witches

Ed Okonowicz is one of the finest chroniclers of true ghost stories at work today. He is also a superb teller of macabre tales and a first rate folklorist. He has combined all of these talents to produce this fine book of "Ghosts, History, Mystery, Legends and Lore" from one of Maryland's oldest cities. The author of many wonderful books about ghosts and legends of the Delmarva area Mr. Okonowicz has split this book into two sections. The first section contains some excellent ghost stories that are often reinforced by eyewitness accounts and are all well documented. Particularly interesting are the stories from the Brice House and St. John's College. There are also excellent stories of ghostly funeral processions and a few headless specters to liven (pardon the pun) up this section. The story from the "Graveyard Shift" is as fine of an example of a true ghost story as you will ever come across. In the second section the author turns his considerable talents to the strange and sometimes horrible acts committed by people who were very much alive at the time of their actions. This author has a particularly good eye for eerie cemetery stories and he once again comes through with a tale of international importance from the national cemetery in Annapolis. He also provides readers with the itinerary of a famous traveling corpse and tells the sad tale of the last lynching in Annapolis. This section ends with a fascinating account of Maryland's problems with witchcraft. For the ghost story purist this book might not seem to quite measure up to some of this author's previous works but that is simply because so much space is dedicated to other matters. The ghost stories that lead off this book are very good and the legends that follow after the ghosts are certain to have at least some appeal to rabid ghost enthusiasts who might be disappointed that there aren't more ghostly tales to be found here. Fans of folklore on the other hand will absolutely love this book and I can't imagine that anyone will really be disappointed. Ed Okonowicz is a very talented writer and can always be counted on for a good chill or two and with this addition to his body of work he has delivered another winner.
