The Child's First library is a wonderful series, which is targeted at ages 4 through 8. Indeed, some of the science topics require that level (or even older) of reasoning ability, but I've found that the "Animal Friends" volume is enjoyable to even my going-on-three grandson. Great attention-grabbing photagraphy and illustrations, and with a little coaching from mom or dad, very educational. One of the best books in the series, especially for the very youngest users.
An excellent resource for the parent whose child asks a lot of questions about animals

This book is an excellent primer on many of the aspects of our animal co-residents of Earth. Written for the young child, (actually for the parent) there are detailed answers too many of the questions children pose. Some examples are: *) Why do dogs sniff all over the place? *) Why do dogs wag their tails? *) Why do cats purr? *) Why are rabbit's ears long? *) Why are some monkey's bottoms read? *) Why do giraffes have long necks? *) Why do mice gnaw on hard things? *) Why does a camel have a hump? The illustrations that accompany the text are colorful and detailed, sure to catch the eye of an inquisitive child. For each question, there is a small caption called "To the parent." It contains more detailed information at a level higher than that of the text meant for the child. I strongly recommend this for parents whose children have lots of questions about animals.
