As a 4th grade Lang. Arts/Social Studies teacher in Texas, I'm always on the lookout for picture books I can use across the curriculum and that are thought-provoking. Little did I realize that this book would be so enjoyable. The children loved it, as did I. The vocabulary suits the 4th-5th grade, inferencing abounds, and there is plenty of information so students can really take the text and relate it to themselves, another book, or the world around them! The reader response project the students did afterward yielded some of the most creative work ever! This would suit any number of topics -- Women's Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, Texas Independence, Compare/Contrast (w/ Legend of Bluebonnet), freedom fighters, immigration and the settling of the old West, and many others. There are even some parallels to stories from the Bible that my students recognized. Great way to broach the subject and sensitively handle a discussion of current events relating to legal and illegal immigration. Hope you enjoy this as much as we did!
