Book Overview

A standard Biblical concordance, Young's casts all words in the Bible into alphabetical order and arranges them under their respective original words. This helps the reader to analyze more accurately the various uses of the original Hebrew and Greek words. Includes over 300,000 biblical references.

A huge help

I purchased my first Young's concordance by accident. I was in the process of trying to figure out for myself, which was the most accurate English language rendition of the original Hebrew and Greek scriptures that I could lay my hands on. So I went down to a local Christian bookstore, and the only concordance they happened to have in stock was the Young's. Granted, it is based on the King James Bible, so you sometimes need to refer to one when searching for the Hebrew or Greek word/s that are related to a particular verse. The Young's is comprehensive and extremely easy to use. With the Young's, all you need do is look up the English word you are seeking and then you can see the Hebrew or Greek, all of their inflections, and all of the verses in which they are used, right there. Strong's also has it's uses, and I have a Strong's as well, but my Young's gets the greater use as it is easier and faster to use than the Strong's, where you have to look up the word, and then look up the Hebrew or Greek according to a reference number. Both concordances are excellent. But I prefer to use the Young's.

Young passes with flying colors.

I purchased my Youngs Concordance while in seminary back in 1976 and it has been in my theological/preaching library ever since. It is a well-used and trusted tool for both sermon preparation and Bible studies. If the test of a reference book is how often one uses it twenty-five years after its purchase, Youngs passes with flying colors. The main strength of this concordance is that it allows those who have no training in the Hebrew and Greek access to these ancient languages. Barely surviving both Hebrew and Greek in seminary, I have found this book to be an invaluable exegetical aid. Is it perfect? Of course not. Can we nitpick and find fault with it? Sure. But if you are looking for a tool to give you access to these ancient languages and which will give you a better understand of the Scripture, it is a good investment. Twenty-five years later, you will still be reaching for it.

The concordance I like the best...

Young's concordance has a unique style of cataloging words: like most concordances, Young's lists all the occurrences of each King James Version (KJV) English word, but with the twist that under each English word, it separates the underlying Hebrew or Greek words that were translated into the indexed English word. As an example, the word "love" might be the word you want to look up. Under the word "love" will appear the Greek word "agapao," with all its references in order. Also will appear the Greek word "phileo," with all of its references. This is really neat, since it gives you a peek behind the KJV text to get at the translators' thoughts in a certain verse. You are also able to compare their use of the English word as a translation of the various Hebrew or Greek words that underly it. The only drawback of the Young's is the lack of a really effective way to research all the words translated in the KJV from a certain Greek or Hebrew word, for instance the word "phileo," which has several English translations. Young's does have an index of this information, but you are forced to look up each English word in order to find the various related verses. For a comprehensive word search on a specific Hebrew or Greek word, Strong's concordance may provide a better choice...Nevertheless, Young's is my first choice for day-to-day use and completeness.

What I like most about Youngs Analytical....

Young's Analytical Concordance for the KJV (which is quite practical for the NKJV) has one particular benefit over other Concordances. While entries are made in English, they are further organized according to the words (with definitions) that they are translated from. By examining other verses that use the same word, it is possible to get a still better understanding of each word. If people would study the Bible in such a manner, I believe that there would be a lot fewer Christian denominations in the world. For the purpose of understanding the Bible, the Bible itself, by the fortification of the Holy Spirit, is our best interpretor. It is non-negotialble that verse be compared to verse, "precept upon precept, line upon line," (Isa 28:10). Youngs makes this kind of deeply rewarding study possible for those without knowledge of the ancient languages. Youngs is indeed nothing less than a treasure map to the most glorious fortune of Truth that this world has ever seen.
