A young girl living in New York flees to a cabin in the woods with her long-term boyfriend once a zombie apocalypse breaks out. He becomes infected and turns on her. In a battle for her life, she commits a necessary murder. Riddled with guilt and the words of a mysterious visitor, she finds a cold and clean escape from the collapsing world to one parallel.
After solving the barrier puzzle in Midworld, the limbo passageway immediately beyond her known reality, she enters a new one, in which the threat of the same widespread acute brain disorder is solely bubbling beneath the nose of the general population. The disorder has not yet ruined the city. In this next reality, she runs through the streets of the city she had fled, on a mission to save what the visitor had convinced her remains of her boyfriend's soul.
Instead, she finds a territorial personal doppelg nger with homicidal intent and a host of new problems due to her inter-universe travel. By the butterfly effect, hundreds, if not thousands, of new worlds, have been created as a consequence of this higher-dimensional voyage.
And she can never return home.
