This text introduces students to the major aspects of film aesthetics, criticism, and history, while emphasizing the relationship between art, artists, and the film industry itself.
Very readable, engrossing textbook format. Inspiring and information. The best I have read in this category. And, without exaggeration, so nicely written it can be bedtime reading.

The 1987 book reveals the history of film, film elements, time, sound, narrative, alternative, analysis & critism--the when, where, and how movies began and developed. How to write a college paper, but my paper is different that I need to write. One learns quickly that the classical Hollywood standard of making movies has influenced all cultures that make movies domestic and foreign. The authors include a glossary and an index. Many shots and pictures of movies with discussions of learning all about the INTRODUCTION OF FILM. For my class, I need some comments and information from you who also have read this book. Did you pickup on the language of film, a vocabulary of film, a grammar of film, codes of meaning in film? I assume the language is the history, the vocabulary and grammar are Part II, & codes Part III. I must read, write a 5-page report, concentrating on these sections with Part V. I am not sure the way the instructions have been given if this is more than a review or report of the book, more than looking literally at the book? I am thinking and is probably in my face clearly, but it presents a problem to me. The reason, I rated it 4 stars--I do not have an updated edition, if there is one, and, anyway, my course requires this edition. The book gives you enough information that one may talk with the critics intellegently. Now, all I want to do is watch the movies of the past and present and take them all in. The authors cover multitudes of movies and categorize them, and some are summarized to explain the effects. Very good book! Please post some insite, if you have read this or had this particular course. Thank you.
