An Available Man by Patric Kuh

This novel, published in 1990, deals with the adventures and misadventures of Francis Buchanan, a fellow who "escorts" older women in Paris for a living, but who is really mourning over the loss of his true love, who unfortunately is a drug addict. Patric Kuh clearly loves Paris and manages to portray many beautiful and ugly aspects of the city while telling his ultimately optimistic story about what appears at first to be a depressing relationship.
