A surprise excellent read!

What an immensely readable book covering 600 years of history! I was preparing for a trip to Amsterdam and timidly started reading this book with the ultimate intention of passing the book along to a fellow traveler. I was pulled in by Shorto’s ability to select interesting individuals out of that long history to tell the story of the time. For me, that is the way to make the “study” of history not only approachable but enjoyable. I marked two more of his books as “Want to Read”! A wonderful book that I might ask my friends to return to me so I can revisit it from time to time.
