Gripping

Easy to read and one of those that you don't want to end! Am in the process of reading all of his books I can get!

Fantastic crime novel: what a brilliant read.

What a fantastic novel - gripping my attention from start to finish. The author did such a fantastic job in describing the characters that you really could relate to them and the story was unfolded without being either under or over descriptive. Action packed and I could see all the scenes in my mind: this novel is made for the movie screen. If you love Dan Brown's recent novels, then you will equally love this novel too. The novel is about a lawyer and how his representation of a petty thief, lead to the unravelling of the largest robbery and heist in Boston's history. The characters in the novel seemed as real as they come from lawyer who was formerly in the irish mob, ex-cop come private detective, a savvy teenager caught in her parent's past and criminals as hard and gritty as they come. The plot was so well thought through and as with all good story telling, the author will unravels all the loose ends. Bravo. A great read.

Quite enjoyable whodunit

The author did a fabulous job creating an interesting, fast-paced story based upon an actual art theft that occurred in 1990. Moreover, the author does a nice job with character development and provides the insight necessary to allow one to empathize with them. This was my first experience with David Hosp, but I will be looking forward to reading more of his work.

Lured in by the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum Mystery

I fell in love with the Isabella Stewart Gardner museum. To go upstairs and find frames without their paintings hanging in the museum is rather haunting and intriguing. To attend one of the talks at the museum and find that no docent is willing to talk about the theft of these incredible pieces of art almost twenty years ago is puzzling. In fact, though the frames are empty they can not be moved according to the will of Isabella Stewart Gardner and so they hang in the museum "sad and out of place." I have been mesmerized. This is why I read Among Thieves. Scott Finn and Lissa Krantz are attorneys in Boston who each have their sordid pasts to account for. Tom Kozlowski, twenty years Lissa's senior, is the ex-cop in their practice. Finn is reconnected to his rough past of gangs and thievery when he attempts to get a forgotten acquaintance, Devon Malley, out of jail. Devon's daughter, Sally, yes, Sally Malley, needs looking after. Scott Finn begrudgingly agrees to keep his eye on Sally until Devon is free. Dumped on her father's door step a year ago Sally is a tough fourteen year old, who knows what it's like to fend for herself. This story is filled with the seedy, South Boston Irish mob scene, heartlessly gruesome in their dealings with those who dare to cross them. Finn is not afraid to enter the mobster world to find the missing artwork and it is because of his fearlessness that this book is a page turner. My love for the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum lured me in to reading this book, but on the one hand, it had nothing to do with the museum, Hosp included some of the history of the museum and the theft of the paintings but really, it could have been about any museum heist. Mostly it was about Hops's characters, and unfortunately, his characters proved to be all too predictable, pretty much contrived. If you are looking for an easy legal thriller read, you will enjoy this book; if you want to be caught off guard, surprised by the ending you will not be.

There Is No Honor

Every once in awhile you come across a book that is so relevant and so well written that you find it difficult to put down. David Hosp has written such a book, 'Among Thieves'. Twenty years ago, the biggest art theft and property theft in history occurred at the Isabella Gardner Museum in Boston. This crime remains unsolved. David Hosp has given us a story that could have taken place, no one knows but the thieves and they aren't talking, or are they? Liam Kilbranish, a member of the IRA from Ireland is in Southie, the Irish part of Boston, looking for something that is his. He has had dealings with a man named Whitey Bulger, one of the most infamous Boston bosses of crime, who has gone missing. Liam knows that three men were the only ones privy to information he is seeking, and he will stop at nothing, nothing, murder is his business and it is his life. Into this mess we find two detectives from the Boston Homicide squad, two FBI agent, a lawyer,and his colleagues and his client. Scott Finn has been called to the Nashua Street Jail to see a client. Finn, as he liked to be called, was in a hurry, the Red Sox were playing and he always made the opening day game on Patriots Day. A day to remember and this day would be one for the books. Finn had been a player in Charlestown before he went straight and became a lawyer, and his client, Devon Malley was from the old days. Malley was in trouble and wanted Finn to get him out of this bind. What seems like an easy enough case turns into the case from Hell. Before long, Finn, his partners Lissa, and Kozlowski see enough murder and mayhem for a lifetime. David Hosp has brought the streets of Southie to us, we feel the poverty, the despair, the southie ganster wanna be's . A few streets down in Charlestown, the grim reality turns into fine homes and condos. Not the Boston Brahmin, but the Irish brogue can still be found. The feel of the city is different, there is hope and clean air. The stories of Southie and Whitey Bulger come alive. The havoc that crime and drugs and drink can wrought are all around us. There for but the grace of God... And, a few miles away is the beautiful Isabella Gardner Museum. We learn of the history of Isabella Gardner and her gift to the city of Boston. My family and I made our second visit to the Isabella Gardner Museum a week after the theft of the art occurred. There were guards on every floor, near every staircase. I bent close to read a plaque on a picture and a guard came over to me and asked me to move back. We could feel the tense electricity in the air, not the place for the beautiful things. David Hosp has captured that atmosphere and more in his novel. This is a real treat, a pearl of a novel. Scott Finn is someone who likes his clients and we can feel that caring. That is part of what this novel brings, into the grim reality of a part of the city that is mired in fear and despair, there is someone who cares. Highly Recommended. prisrob 11-18-09 Innocence

another winner by David Hosp!

This was a race to the finish - I read this book in one sitting - fast moving with lots of twists and turns - I especially like how the author took a real life crime and wove his story around it - his characters were well developed and the reader felt a part of the story - on edge waiting for the end result. I highly recommend all of David Hosps' books - you won't be disappointed
