What can I say... Its not a satisfying conclusion to a trilogy.
American Monsters makes several call-backs to the previous books, but very few land well for me and the story feels like its full of half-measures and underdeveloped threads. Characters from the previous books are thrown in, with little thought and discarded without care.
In his previous series, Landy was well-known for his macabre desire to kill off his characters. I didn't have a problem there, but there was some amount of care given. Some effort to develop their stories. In this book, there is no such care. Characters are killed with no-legitimate development and it feels careless. Like the writer just gave up, rather than actually try and think of a way to do it. The ending is legitimately frustrating because it feels like after so much happening and so many people dying, that in the end... Nothing really truly mattered in the end. It was all fairly pointless.
The issues are further compounded with some weird portrayals of queerness within major characters. It feels less like the characters are really part of the Queer community and more like someone guessing at what it might be like and how to make it as appealing as possible.
Its such a strange book. I wish I liked it more; For all the issues with the previous books, I did enjoy them and I loved that Landy was writing a new series. I wish he gave this one more time and effort and try to develop the characters better. It deserved more. Its fine, to read to finish off the series, but try and borrow it from a library instead, rather than spending money on it. I hope Landy takes a chance to revisit the characters someday and do right by them.
