Lacrosse and beyond

"American Indian Games," by Jay Miller, is a good educational book for younger readers. It has an easy-to-read text, and is richly illustrated with many photographs. This book tells about many of the games and toys of Native Americans, both in the past and present. Among the topics covered are "jabber" toys (used to challenge hand-eye coordination), snowsnake (a game that involves throwing a spear along a groove in snow or ice), and more. There are many fascinating photos, such as one of sled made from buffalo ribs. The book covers lacrosse, which is probably the best known traditional American Indian sport. The author notes that some Native American peoples play a one-racket version, whereas some play a two-racket version (both types are shown in the photos). The book also discusses Native American participation in games and sports introduced by the Europeans. Overall, a very interesting book.
