American Gridlock: the Legacy of Secular Governance

What changed on July 4th 1776? Of course you want to know about the historical baggage. North American colonists as subjects of a king by Divine Right lived subject to abuse. They revolted against it, but knew it as their only societal norms all their lives. First, they announced they were in revolt and why. From an existing belief system established with absolute rights only for the king and his chosen property owners, to a new belief system of self-governed free men! Second, they announced the new authority to govern would be by consent of the governed, therefore a democracy. Third, they promised life, liberty and happiness as goals under law for all citizens of the United States. They would establish justice for the citizens even at the state level. All it would take would be tolerance of each other, and compromise. What could go wrong? We will review the key change agents and their outcomes, sometimes for the good of a majority, and sometimes not. Gridlock and progress are the ebb and flow of this narrative history, written by a man who loves the promise of America, without hiding the hurdles both of human nature, and ever-growing knowledge of the reality of creation and its God.
