This is an excellent resource on the people who have made a significant contribution to American Government. It lists the top 36 men & women who made an impact. The book is separated into 4 different parts: 1) Founding Fathers (John Adams, Ben Franklin, Albert Gallatin, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, John Marshall, James Monroe, & George Washington); 2) Early Days of the Republic (John Q. Adams, John Calhoun, Henry Clay, Sam Houston, Andrew Jackson, James Polk, & Daniel Webster); 3) Civil War-WWI (William Jennings Bryan, Jefferson Davis, Robert LaFollette, Abraham Lincoln, Justin Morrill, Jeannette Rankin, Teddy Roosevelt, & Woodrow Wilson); 4) Modern Times (Dwight Eisenhower, Oliver Wendell Holmes, George Marshall, Thurgood Marshall, Richard Nixon, George Norris, Eleanor Roosevelt, FDR, Margaret Chase Smith, Robert Taft, Harry Truman & Earl Warren). Various presidents, members of congress, supreme court justices, and military leaders were selected. I found it very interesting to read about people who are not well known or famous, but whose contributions led our country down a certain path. Pictures are included among all the chapters. The one I found fasinating is a photograph of James Polk where Dolly Madison is included- first time I've ever seen an actual photograph of her. In the back of the book there is a timeline of world events & U.S. events. There is also a bibliography that gives additional references on each individual for further study. The flow in the book is wonderful. I highly recommend it. However, the only downside is that it was written in 1988, so more recent contributions are obviously not included. The timeline ends in 1974.
