Like Frank Conroy's Stop-Time, this is an all-time great book about being a young American.
Heartbreaking and real

I first read this when I was a teenager (in the 80s) and I have read it many times since then. It is about a girl living in the 1950s and her life with alcoholic parents. Hmmm...actually my description does not do it justice. The story is told in an intimate style and the reader feels as if the girl is speaking directly to him/her. (I am calling her "the girl" because we never learn her name) It's sad and funny and incredibly "real". I strongly recommend this book to teenage readers and to anyone who was one in the 1950s, too. I can't believe it's out of print! It shouldn't be.
