The best medical encyclpedia/guide I have ever seen

First let me say that I used to have the classic AMA Encyclopedia of Medicine for years from 1989 edition, and finally the AMA released a newer book, but it is certainly not as good as the first one and not as good as this ACP Med Guide. Just go to any bookstore and open any page and you'll see what I mean. The AMA hardly has any photos in the text and is not as nearly richly illustrated as the ACP Complete Med Guide. This book is loaded with so many rich full color photos and illustrations, it is mind boggling. I have worked in the medical field for nearly 10 years and I have never seen some of the photos in this book. Many photos are close up using electron microscopes that capture spectacular images of cells. I had taken anatomy and physiology I and II in college and never saw an image of a nerve entering a muscle fiber. There's a ton of images of various diseases that show you for example instantly what a suspicious skin mole might look like. Every major system in the body is covered exhaustively by diagrams not just showing the anatomy but how the system and each organ work together. There's a first aid section at the end that illustrates CPR etc. There's links to relevant websites throughout the text. Just go browse it at any bookstore.. I could not put it down for two hours! Well done American College of Physicians and DK publishing!

There are many pictures depictingthe human anatomy, or portions thereof, in full color.The approaches to describing the various disease processesare modern. In addition, the work distinguishes between relateddiseases and conditions. A beauty of the work is that it describes how patients function given the most debilitatingmedical conditions presented. For instance,ankylosing spondylitis causes permanent disability in 1 in 20patients wherein they lose the ability to do routinetasks/functions. Basic medical terms are defined exhaustively.The book is a worthy purchase as a desk reference fora wide constituency of medical providers and the generalpublic. This is a worthy addition to your existing medicinal health library. It contains brand new protocols. As such,I recommend purchasing this volume because it will help youto formulate the various disease processes encountered intoprecise medical language and diagnostic terminology.Clearly, the volume has been researched thoroughly and it isready for general public use. Another feature of the work isthat the authors describe comparative costs for complexsurgeries so that consumers have a basis to compare prices.

A must for every home library...

It's difficult to review something so extensive in just a few paragraphs so I'll keep it as simple as possible........Bought this book for my parents and am going to buy one for myself right now. Will probably give a copy to my cousin who's just starting college. An extremely helpful and informative medical reference guide - over 1000 pages. Very well organized. The information is presented in many different ways so that all types of readers can understand - photographs, illustrations, charts, graphs, tables - simple and thorough. If this book doesn't have the answer - it will point you in the right direction to find it.... In my opinion a must for every home reference library like a dictionary or a thesaurus.If you have reservations about purchasing it on-line, this book is worth checking out at your local bookstore.

Great reader-friendly professional book

As a clinician, not all is new matterial to me, it is always helpful to either double check or look for other possibilities and explanations. As a mother, I find this book as a must in every house. You understand better and get answers that your physician/Pediatrician may not give you. Some times you just don't know what to ask, and it helps a lot. The CD .....that's something else! Beautiful 3D scanning of body organs, systems with simple, yet informative, explanations/definitions and more.As I said - a MUST in every home!

The editorial and design content out of this world!

The Complete Home Medical Guide is a complete life-changing experience! Many congratulations to the publishers DK for their insight and understanding of the American market. All too often have we Americans felt too cerebrally inferior to approach our physicians in order to understand everyday medical conditions. The graphics are overwhelmingly colorful and brilliant; the complexities of modern-day medicine are explained in such awe-inspiring, vivid, intelligible prose; and the overall content a great tribute to the staff who must have put their heart and soul into a book that is obviously going to take the charts by storm. Keep up the good work, DK! I'll be looking forward to the second edition!
