Amelia Earhart and Eleanor Roosevelt were birds of a feather. Not only were they two of the most admired and respected women of all time, they were also good friends...
"Amelia and Eleanor were birds of a feather. Eleanor was outspoken and determined. So was Amelia. Amelia was daring and liked to try things other women wouldn't even consider. Eleanor was the very same..." So begins Pam Munoz Ryan's marvelous picture book adventure, Amelia And Eleanor Go For A Ride. These two famous "birds" were Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady of the United States, and Amelia Earhart, world famous aviator and the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. This interesting book is about two extraordinary women and what they did one night together. In 1933, there was a special dinner party at the White House. The First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt, invited the first lady of aviation, Mrs. Amelia Earhart. During the dinner, Amelia told a thrilling story about one night when she was flying in the dark sky. Inspired by this story, Amelia and Eleanor then decided to take a short flight to Baltimore and back. Eleanor was thrilled with the flight. This book captures the spirit and friendship between these two unique women. It is rare to find a children's book that is both historical and interesting for young readers. I recommend this fantastic book.

This book discusses a little-known newspaper bite about the First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and Amelia Earhart. They both find the male-dominated formal dinner not to their liking and slip away for a quiet flight over D.C. The book does a good job of showing how well-rounded both of these women were. They could be serious when they had to be, but would much rather break away for a little fun. Also, this book shows that these women were fundamentally the same as every other woman in the country. The only thing that distinguished them was the positions they held; Eleanor being the First Lady and Amelia being a woman and a pilot. I picked this book up in the bookstore to just take a look and ended up sitting down to read the whole thing! The pictures bring the words to life and will delight both parent and child.
