The accomplishments of Alton Ochsner (1896-1981) constitute a major chapter in the history of twentieth-century medicine. In a career that spanned sixty years, he performed 20,000 operations. His wide-ranging medical research was the basis for nearly 600 published papers. He inspired 3,000 medical students and trained 300 surgeons, and he spearheaded the founding of what has become the South's largest independent medical center.
