Mateo and Guillermo are true friends. Theirs is the story of life in the ancient setting of Andalusia in southern Spain in the late 1500s. The story begins with young Mateo as a soldier aboard a Spanish treasure fleet galleon. He returns from the New World with seeds of new plants, such as peppers, potatoes and tomatoes, which were largely unknown at the time in Spain. His family grows and tastes them for the first time. Mateo, Guillermo, and their friends are skilled with the weapons of their time and are fearless in confronting villains they encounter. They are times of gentility yet wickedness. The story has all the elements of a western novel (good guys, bad guys, bandits, pretty senoritas), as well as a dose of Spanish history. If you are a fan of action and adventure, with a little humor thrown in, you will enjoy "Along the Guadalquivir."
