I have read almost all this author's books but I think this has been my favorite. It moves right along and the suspense seems thicker than in most of her stories. Susan Sayre goes to New York to visit her grandfather whom she hasn't seen since she was 7 years old. Her first few years were spent in this creepy gothic like house of her grandfather's, but after her mother's death, she was sent to live with cousins in California. She can remember absolutely nothing of those years spent there. She is greeted by trepidation and some fright by the her aunt, uncle, servants and cousin. The suspense builds at once because everyone seems wary and somewhat frightened of her. Buy what could a 7 year old child have done to cause all these people to fear her now 14 years later? She starts looking for answers and is shocked at what she finds. I don't want to give away the plot any further but the book kept me up til 3 in the morning reading it! I couldn't put it down until I found out what happened.
