Vivid, descriptive romance...one of Barbara's best

When the gently sheltered Una Thoreau arrives in Paris, she is shocked to discover that her father is dead and that she has no one in the world to depend upon. An accidental meeting with a famous art dealer (who also leads a double life as a 'procurer of women') leads her to an encounter with the cynical Duke of Wolstanton, and he mistakenly assumes that she is an experienced courtesan masquerading as an innocent, shy girl. Throughout the novel, we are treated with liberal descriptions of the infamous Moulan Rouge, the gay night life Paris is so famous for, and several other frequently visited tourist attractions. There is also a lot of interesting conversation between the characters where well known artists and objects of art/literature are mentioned- the author seems to have done her research well in this area. Alone in Paris' main focus though, is the big question regarding Una... the duke spends most of the story wondering if she is the real thing or just another pretender. Unlike most of Ms. Cartland's heroes, Wolstanton is a tougher nut to crack, but it makes sense that this should be a natural result of the company he has had to put up with, and the greed and avariciousness of sophisticated society which he has become accustomed to. But as it is with all of Cartland's books, everything straightens out in the end and the duke is chastised. We are then treated to a sweet little romance between this extremely jaded character and his inexperienced ward. I really did enjoy this novel and I recommend it heartily to those who like romances where opposite personalities are involved and the generous background descriptions constantly keep the reader awake. Of course, the story itself was very, very romantic and the whole experience of falling in love was practically a spiritual awakening for the duke- it was truly a joy to witness this change in him! :D
