Book is fine- Condition not so much

This book I think is a good fit for more mature young ones to be reading. There are plenty of pictures of the event as well as a few charts of information to aid in understanding the danger the boys were in. That being said I bought a "good condition" hardback copy and yet the jacket is ripped to hell and back, there is not "minimal" writing in the margins - a child wrote very large notes on what seems to be every 10 pages or so. Tried returns and supposedly this is not eligible but yet it doesn't match the description. This was supposed to be a Christmas gift so I am deeply disappointed. Got a copy of Call of the Wild in person today instead.
