This is a terrific look inside the English team as they prepare for, and go through, the 1990 World Cup. It gives a good sense of the great differences in attitudes and feelings among the different players. And also the hounded feeling players have while trying to deal with their press obligations. It gets a little slow when he's talking about his trouble travelling and what happens to him between games. And you may want to read up a little on the football culture of this period first, as there are a lot of references to England being barred from European comps and the hooligan factor. But I guarantee that, once finished, you'll be looking up everyone that you read about to learn more. Oh, Gazza... what could have been.
