Claude and Michele Stanush bring to life, not only the person of Willis Newton, a Texas outlaw in the 1920s, but also early 20th century rural and urban life, struggling to co-exist. This father and daughter writing team did a superb job with this "nonfiction novel," telling the story of the Newton Boys through the first person viewpoint of Willis, the leader of the gang. The device of first person narration makes Willis sympathetic, yet not overly so. He is flawed, but so engaging, that I found myself hoping against hope that he would not get caught, knowing that he deserved to get caught. I was touched by his tender relationship with the love of his life, Louise Brown. This book could easily be taught as an adjunct in Texas history classes.
