This book is packaged as a Western ,a categorisation I tend to dispute ,mainly because of its setting which ,as the title suggests ,is Alaska rather than the Western frontier of mainland America.I prefer to view it as a rugged outdoor adventure story and it is very good of its type . It opens in 1886 when Clay Macon ,scion of a prominent New Orleans family journeys to Alaska with 2 aims in mind -to discover gold but also to unearth the mystery of what happened to his father who had been to Alaska and returned a broken man ,refusing to divulge what had befallen him in the time he spent there . Clay meets his old friend ,Jordan LaSec , a charming and courageous man albeit more than a little reckless .They meet in Skagway ,a violent, lawless community dominated by the overbearing Sully Flatts .When Clay reveals Halls is a card sharp they are thrown into prison but released on what appear to be flimsy grounds .Flatts is behind this as he feels they have the secret to the whereabouts of a rich gold mine and is intent on trailing them and killing them when the mine is discoverd .En route they pick up a companion ,a street urchin named Patsy about whom we are kept in doubt -he may be a tool of Faltts ,a spy in the camp . The party locates a homestead belonging to a former partner of Clay's father ,situated in a remote almostr paradisical valley ,where they are forced to deal with Flatts minions in a climactic shootout The only real weakness of the book is some rather arch and whimsical dialogue ,which I found irritating but this is a minor blemish set against lively action scenes ,sone very fine descriptive writing and a suprising and bneat revelation about Patsy for which I was unprepared , This is a good read for the long winter nights and should be better known that it is
Excellent reading and full of suspence
