Al Zaatari Refugee Camp as Permanent Housing

Refugee camps are scattered across the globe. Refugees are living in poverty and hard living conditions, without adequate infrastructure. This book, originally a dissertation, rethinks refugee camps' structure from being temporary to a more permanent alternative, "permanent housing." The book uses Al Zaatari Refugee Camp in Jordan as a prime example to provide refugees with cleaner and safer dwellings. It emphasizes that instead of creating refugee camps dependent on aid, a permanent approach through design solutions could be implemented; it proposes five design solutions for Al Zaatari refugee camp and other refugee camps with available funding. It is suggested that implementing the design strategies would better connect refugee camps with their hosting countries and would help refugees become an active part of society, instead of looking back at what they once had, they could look forward to a better and brighter future. The project was nominated for Hawaii Architecture Foundation (HAF) award and for ARCC King Student Medal For Excellence.
