To grow old in the best way possible

To grow old in the best way possible, October 11, 2006 This is a comprehensive look at the physical, mental and social consequence of aging. It is written in a simple and clear language. It discusses a wide variety of age- related subjects. I found a number of the book's claims extremely interesting and relevant to my own situation. I am already in my sixties and therefore I suspect like most people of this age , looking to maintain for as long as possible the powers I have. Atchley suggests that one real turning point for aging is not sixty or sixty- five but closer to seventy. It is then when one's physical equipment , in general of course, works truly less well. He suggests however that contrary to common opinion, most people manage to maintain themselves at home in their Old Age. He too reminds that Aging is not one process but many different ones. I found the book filled with hopefully useful information. It makes no grandiose claims and certainly does not peddle as certain Aging books do, the myth of a secret Fountain- of - Youth. We are all going one way whether we like it or not. The book was published in 1986 and there have been of course many developments in the study of this area since that time. With the Baby- Boomers moving into Old- dom I suspect these will multiply greatly. One or two more points. Atchley stresses that the best exercise for most of us is 'Walking'. I have found this to be true though I played many sports in youth. Walking is one of the great pleasures of my life and I feel I have actually improved my health through walking regularly. One of the subjects I do not believe Atchley deals with insufficiently is that of those living in disabilitating chronic illness. This too is a 'gift' of modern Medicine. Clearly however people today extend their powers in various areas more than they were able to do in the past. Most readers will I think be able to get from this work important tips on how to age in the best way possible.
