Book Overview

Agathe von Trapp, the oldest daughter in the Trapp Family Singers, offers readers the real story behind an American classic in her poignant and fascinating autobiography Memories Before and After The Sound of Music. The courageous family and events immortalized in the beloved Broadway musical and hit Hollywood film come vibrantly alive in these pages, and Agathe's post-Sound of Music life is equally compelling.

Highly readable

OK, I have to confess I checked my local library first, but they didn't have it, so I got out my credit card.I have read as much as possible about the von Trapp family from many sources but still gleaned much new information from this book.I don't believe many people realize how old the children were before they finally quit after years of touring. And I thought the best part was at the end when she told what happened to each of the children. They have lived diverse and meaningful lives and both Maria and the Captain would be proud of them.

an absorbing autobiography

I was delighted with this well written autobiography by the oldest daughter of the von Trapp family of "Sound of Music" fame. She tells the story of her life before and after "The Sound of Music" became so popular. She also brings us up to date on all of her sisters and brothers. I loved her sketches that are in the book and the beautiful photographs. I am giving this book to all my friends. I would highly recommend this lovely book to other readers because it tells the true story of this famous family. Knowing what their life was really like was more exciting to me than any movie.

Absolutely Delightful

This is a delightful book and is essential reading for anyone who enjoyed "The Sound of Music" play or movie. There are apparently substantial differences between the real von Trapp family and that portrayed in the fictionalized version of their story, and it was fascinating to discover the true story. It was particularly interesting to learn more about the mother and father of seven of the ten children who eventually became part of the singing family. The many photographs in the book bring the story to life, and the author's drawings -- completed as the author was growing up and inserted in sections of the story that correspond to the time at which the drawings were made -- were absolutely charming. This book is both meaningful and entertaining.

Insightful and totally entertaining

I love this book ! The flow from the beginning to the end is like a meandering creek gently leading us through the author's life. Descriptions and and reflections on the past make you feel as if you are part of the family and in the end make you wish you were . The Hollywood version of the Trapp story PALES in comparision to the real story.
