An Old-fashioned Childhood

A cleverly written novel that wraps the reader in the everyday existence of rural living in upstate New York at the end of the 1800's. Through the clear prose of the author we get to share the hopes, joys, fears, and sorrows of a young boy growing up in that environment. Younger readers should also be able to easily relate to the coming-of-age realizations of the young boy. The well defined personality studies of the characters enhance the story, and the plot progression builds to an engrossing and satisfying resolution.

the Hobo Philosopher

Well, I feel I could build my own maple syrup shack now. Hollis' exciting and productive experiences in being sent to Grandpa's farm make me yearn to be a back-to-the-land-er. Oh for that simple life back on the farm - home cured hams, fresh garden vegetables, and sweet creamy milk right from the cow. Unfortunately, my problem is that I have already been there and done that. IT IS A LOT OF WORK! But it was great to read about it all once again. This was an exciting adventure for a young boy. It was filled with tragedy and bad luck but all's well that ends well. I would say that this is a feel good book. It is filled with knowledge about life on a small farm. It is homey, comfy and warm. I really enjoyed it. Books written by Richard Noble: "Hobo-ing America: A Workingman's Tour of the U.S.A.."
