The standard version of the Verdi Classic

ISBN: 0-7935-5187-0... This is for the "G. Schirmer Opera Score Editions" version of Verdi's Classic Aida. This is the version most often used by opera companies when they are staging this epic. If you are a chorus member, principal singer, accompianist, or just an opera fan who wants to read along then this is the book for you. This ISBN is the paper-back binding version. There is a spiral-bound version of the exact same book, but that I'm unsure of how to get. Current Retail is $34.95.

Aida - Black Dog Library - Opera by Giuseppe Verdi

Wow. This Black Dog Library production of Aida is superb. The 144 page hard cover book includes two CDs with stunning performances by Biigit Nilsson (Aida) and Franco Corelli (Radames). Zubin Mehta conducted the orchestra. Written by David Foil who clearly knows his subject, the book illuminates a subject that is dark and confusing to many individuals. In this publication, Foil explains the circumstances under which Giuseppe Verdi accepted the commission to write Aida. He follows through with clear details on the scope of the production and its place in the pantheon of grand opera, comparing and contrasting with Wagner and Meyerbeer. This package contains the complete opera on two CDs; the complete libretto in both Italian and English and critical historical commentary. Last, but not least, there are dozens of photographs that bring the words and music to life.

A Valuable Collection Piece

Brilliant voices of Birgit Nilsson, Franco Corelli with Orchestra e Coro Del Teatro dell' Opera di Roma under Zubin Mehta. A marvelous studio recording without audience noises. A number of stage photos of major performances and introduction of Verdi and the writing of AIDA. Two CD's with the complete opera with complete libretto in Italian and English. A great value. A must-have.

The best interpretation of an opera for children I've seen.

The combination of Leontyne Price as the storyteller and the Dillons as the artists makes this an outstanding book. I question recommending this book as appropriate for Ages 4-8. As an elementary teacher, I introduced this book to fourth,fifth, and sixth graders. They all liked it, but the sixth graders LOVED IT! Getting 12 year olds to tolerate a picture book is an achievement in itself. These sixth graders saw a love story, and really were spellbound when I read it to them. Playing some of the music and reading this story introduces children to the world of opera. Please buy this book for all ages; I have given it to many adult friends too! ,,

Terrific Package and a bargain

The Black Dog Opera Library series are beautifully packaged and way underpriced. They each contain 2 CDs of the complete opera in the inside covers of a compact hardcover book which contains photos and commentary, as well as an annotated libretto in the original language and English translation, referenced to the CD, and notes and photos of the main performers and conductor. The performances are usually classic ones and though not necessarily recorded in the digital age they all sound gorgeous. I have only been able to find 4 (Magic Flute, Aida, La Boheme, and Carmen) and wish there were more. The only flaws in my opinion are that there is no information regarding the date or location of the performances nor is there a complete cast listing
