WebClass coverage

I'll tell you why I give this 5 stars:Not only does it cover WebClasses, but it does it very well. WebClasses are a compiled ASP project in Visual Basic. You could argue that coverage of this doesn't belong in a book on ASP, but I'm glad it's here. The very clever trick in listing 17-21 will allow me to reduce my application template processing from thousands of lines to a few dozen. For this, I figure the $40 price was very well worth it.If it's full of bugs, well - maybe that'll help in practicing debugging :-) I haven't yet tried the discussion forum, but this kind of "non-trivial" example is so much better than what you usually get.As in so many computer books these days, the appendices are (to me) unnecessary and add to the weight of the book. I have lots of HTML books, so I have no use for appendix B's 50 pages.

Delivers as the title promises!

If the title and description of this book appeals to you, you should buy it! I like to pick up programming languages when I get tired of reading other things, and this is the best self teaching book for a language that I have ever read! ASP came surprisingly easy with this book, especially since to use it you really need to also learn HTML & SQL. This book explains ASP and gives you just enough HTML & SQL to get cracking. The only thing that was missing was a JavaScript primer, and as one of the reviewers already mentioned not all of the source code is on the CD ROM (no big deal to me, at least). If you are looking to create dynamic web content, I reccomend this book as well as it's companion for Java Script. In the future, I will always look for this series of book when learning a new language!

Solid Step-by-step Coverage

Easy reading and not intimidating. This book covers the basics smoothly and progressively. If you are trying to pick up the basics of asp quickly this is highly recommended.

Very good book! I'd recommend getting this book for ASP

I was pleasently surprised after reviewing this book. Its laid out nicely. What I liked probably the best it wasn't heavy reading. This book covers all the way from the beginnings of how to setup your environment to dealing with Arrays and the architecture of them. It will a bit slow for an advanced person but definately ranks up there with other quality ASP books such as ones from Wrox and Scott Mitchell's Learn ASP 3.0 in 21 days by sams. The book is targeted at beginners and novice intermediates(which I am). Its worth checking out!

Best ASP book on the market

This is an excellent resource for applying and learning the ASP craft and it smoothly moves from beginner to advanced concepts while covering the key ground. Four things make this book stand out from the crowd: (1) It's an excellent introduction to HTML, VBScript,ADO and ASP and more advanced topics.(2) It's clear and uses relevant examples(3) It's comprehensive in it's coverage(4) It smoothly moves from beginner to advanced material. This book was written by a seasoned and certified developer and a regular contributor to the ASP/ VB community. And it shows: in the quality of the examples and the clear structure and layout of the book and code. The section on ADO essentials (Chapter 10) is excellent, and I liked the section that discussed remotely connecting to a database and using DataLink files (pages 212 to 216 in my book). That's not mentioned in most books but it's vital if you intend to connect to a database such as SQL server over a LAN or external hosting service. The script in this book is well structured, and uses a style familiar to VB programmers. That's invaluable when you actually put a site together, and want to debug and maintain your code. This book is a good companion to 'Instant ASP Scripts' by McGrawHill. The latter is a 'cook book' with ready recipes for most of the core functions you'll need for a site. ASP Bible, helps structure the 'spaghetti code' of the former book, while rounding out the missing parts and providing the depth you'll need to enhance your site. The downloadable code samples from the book which are listed in the preface worked fine (after adjusting the code to reflect my local drive settings, DSN name etc). Despite a few glitches in the commentary, there is plenty of good content and examples in this book. For best results use this with a 'cook-book' or 'application-ready.' A good resource if you want a book that provides a practical walk through, and plenty of bite sized examples of what you'll need to know and use as a web developer.
