This process of self-analysis often leads to the realization, I am living for others and not for myself, along with the question, Is this the life I really would have wanted had I been truly free to choose my role and my path? It frequently causes a stinging pain brought about by a revelation over how much time one has lost living for others rather than for one's self. It also stirs thoughts of mortality and issues with mortality that propel many people to search for spirituality and the meaning of life. We are still seeking our missing piece by exploring a new religion, seeking 12-step support groups, and more, rather than knowing that our peace is within rather than without. When I know my peace is within, I can then seek support without to strengthen my inner peace through religion, 12-step support groups, and therapy. Only when you get to the end of this initial phase of self-discovery and find no comfort in the external will you go within to experience the aching hurt of the many, many losses in your life so you can truly grieve. None of this will occur until you fully surrender and embrace the desire to experience a break in tolerance that says, "I'm lost. I am in pain, and I want it to stop!" Only then can you hope that, by breaking the tolerance level of your emotions, you will be motivated enough to change. It is through the grieving process that you can move forward by overcoming your fear of change and consequences, so you can make the adjustments in your life needed to attain what you really want. With this break in tolerance, by becoming aware of the limitations you have set for yourself and by taking responsibility, you will be able to begin operating out of want instead of need. Once this occurs, you will set yourself up to become free - once and for all - a total acceptance of self, thus enabling you to love others without reservation and be loved in return.
