Best of the New York travel guides

We looked at a lot of travel books before making our second trip to New York. The first time we relied mainly on internet printouts and the New York pass guidebook, but the second time we would have more time for exploring the city, so we looked for more information. Compact, easy to read except for one thing - the book tends to alternate between portrait and landscape format, which means you've got to turn the thing sideways at times. The pictures are good, the highlights and the neighborhood tours are a real plus. You can organize your trip effectively, a real must in Manhattan, where travel eats up a lot of your day. There are also sections on the other boroughs. This book will be going with us each day; the other book will be staying in the luggage for reference in the evenings. We almost didn't even look at this book because the AAA travel guides were such a flop where New York was concerned. Too big, too much information on things that did not matter, too much small print, and generally a waste of luggage space. In contrast, this guide is a great way to get information about touring the best of the area. It is worth your time! One issue with this book arises with the suggestion that one can do "lower Manhattan in a day," including Liberty Island and Ellis Island. It can't happen any more. Due to the long security line, plus the long waits for ferries at every stop, doing Liberty and Ellis will occupy the better part of a day. We've gone in October and in December, and both times, we waited in long lines and spent the entire day doing the two sites.
