A World So Alien: Living in a world when you are so very different.

A book of poetry, about Autism, and an experience so difference to the neurotypical (non-autistic). A book hoping to capture an individual experience of autism, living in such an alien world, built for neurotypicals where trauma, struggle and difficulty is the norm, the constant everyday survival. I hope it speaks to others with Autism, and can help neurotypicals understand the Autistic experience. The first chapter; 'An Inner World', addresses the self, and sense of this, especially when someone on the spectrum is fully aware of how different and alien their sense of their world is compared to neurotypicals. The second chapter; 'An Outsider Looking In', deals with interactions with other people from an autistic point of view; friends, family, romantic partners, while tackling hurtful times, misuse, abuse, and light-hearted moments of kindness. Tackling masking or otherwise known as the camouflage for an autistic person to fit in to maintain social relationships, done with both success and failure, where even the successes lead to exhaustion, mental anguish and a diminished and harmful loss of our own sense of self. The last chapter; 'I Cannot Feel this World Around Me' tackles autism in reference to the wider world and a person coming to terms with this, the limitations, fears, vulnerabilities, where autistic people are more likely to be misunderstood by law enforcement or others putting them in highly vulnerable or at-risk situations. Where 80% of autistic people aren't in full employment either due to active discrimination, unintended discrimination or a system built that leaves autistic people out of society, or at the fringes at the very best.Anthony Gorin is a self-taught poet and photographer focusing on mental health through his arts and personal journey and its interaction with the arts and creativity. Both his photography and poetry come with a singular goal emphasizing his mission to capture mental health, social justice issues, beauty in the everyday and an aim to use art for change and empathy. While showing people that beauty can be found wherever you are or wherever you go, as he likes to say- beauty, in normalcy. Anthony constantly emphasises the use of creativity in order to promote healing, understanding of one's own traumas, past and finding a way into building one's own future. Anthony currently resides and goes about his art in Brighton where he has been since moving there for university back in 2014.
