A tremendous book that I read as a child

There are some books that you read when you are young that have an indelible effect upon you, and this book is one of them. It has been almost twenty years since I read it and the imagery of the book is easily recalled. I can remember dialogue, characters, plot lines, culture, even after all of this time. More importantly, the moral of the story, one of self-discovery, of dictating your own destiny, is one that is still with me. This is a book that I would read to my children, or encourage them to read. It is a wonderful book.
