A Treasury of Baby Names by Alan Benjamin is not exactly a treasury, though it has 217 pages and 1000's of names with meanings. The introduction pages are neatly and convincingly written under heading "The First Gift". Among the first and most important gifts we give our children are their names and hence a baby name is very important. The Girls and Boys names are separated, but each page does not indicate them. At a glance you do not know you are looking at boys names or girls names. Each category is separated alphabetically under headings A..Z.Each name is followed by it source-Greek, Hebrew, Spanish, Finnish, etc. Then there is its meaning and its variants. For example ANDREA is a 'Latin' girls name meaning Womanly & it is feminine form of Andrew. Its variants are Andra, Andreana, Andria, Andriana and Andy.America's most popular names are listed from pages 214 to 218. The first listing shows how the ten most popular names have changed from 1898 to 1948 through 1928. For example Mary,Mary,Linda and John,John,Robert. The next listing shows how the most popular names changed every year in the 5 year period 1984 to 1988. These listings are rarely found in other baby names books. The author must have done good amount of research to list them in order.Apart from these, this book also has The Twelve Personalities of The Zodiac, Birthstones + Flower combinations.Ultimately this book can be referred to as being a quick reference for names and meanings. Though it is not a treasury, it has a good collection of names.
