A must for Catholics

It's human nature to try to find out more about something you love. Since I love Catholicism, I was overjoyed to find this book. In the course of my readings (commentaries and such) I come across words that I don't know or don't know the exact meaning of and this book is a great reference. It's like a dictionary or encyclopedia where you can easily find words complete with understandable definition and explanation. Anything that gives me better understanding of the language of my faith is of great value to me. This book is a God-send - I don't have to use an unabridge dictionary or scour the internet. The answer is right there in my hands. Every Catholic should have one.

Warms the Hearts of Readers

From a recent blog entry: "I am not a Know-Nothing. That is certain. How could I be? How can any one who abhors the oppression of negroes, be in favor of degrading classes of white people? Our progress in degeneracy appears to me to be pretty rapid. As a nation, we begin by declaring that 'all men are created equal.' We now practically read it 'all men are created equal, except negroes.' When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read 'all men are created equal, except negroes, and foreigners, and catholics.' When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretence of loving liberty." -- Abraham Lincoln in a 24 August 1855 letter cited in the entry for "Know-Nothingism" in my just-received copy of the "A to Z Guide to the Catholic Faith." The book, based on Robert C. and Virginia Broderick's "The Catholic Encyclopedia," is published by an imprint of Thomas Nelson Publishers, a group known for Protestant titles. Note in the reviews for the Encyclopedia a submission by Rev. Johann Roten, S.M., of Dayton, Ohio. He is presumably the same Fr. Roten who teaches at the University of Dayton's Marian Research Institute, and he rightly describes the A to Z Guide as "one of the best Catholic encyclopiedias around - written with lay-people in mind. It is easy to understand, and, literally, warms the hearts of the readers." Just so. I received my copy earlier this week and have enjoyed the crisp entries on historical topics, the liturgy, canon law, and theology. Virginia Broderick's beautiful, simple illustrations are found throughout, and the overall layout and presentation of the book is superb. And at eight bucks it's a steal.
