A must read for all ages

I also read this book as a teenager 20 years ago. Now that my kids are beginning to enjoy going to the library I wanted to borrow and re-read it, but am having a difficult time finding it. This book touched me greatly. It is an incredible story about a brave young man and his amazing family, in particular his relationship with his little brother. It is wonderfully written and I would highly recommend it to those of all ages. One thing...why do I remember it being titled "May I Cross your Golden River"?

It has never left me

I read this book about 1976. It has always stayed with me. I even wanted to do my 9th grade science report on ALS because of this book. I never forgot the dogs name, Cicero. It was such a visually imaginable book. I think I sub-conciously named my first, Jordan because this book never left me. It will make you cry and bring you to a place that no one goes to. I HIGHLY recommend this book to all. It is a wonderful book. I hope they put it back in print so my daughter can also fall in love with it. Gosh, I think I read it 10 times.

This book never fails to touch me

I read this book for the first time many years ago and still find myself returning to it time and time again. The strength of family that it portrays never fails to touch me.

heart-wrenching, touching and realistic

If we are lucky, a few books will truly touch us during our lifetime. For a teenager who unwillingly checked this book out of her junior high school library, this book left a permanent impression. I read this book over ten years ago, yet the moment I saw an interview with Michael Zaslow, formerly of Guiding Light, on television talking about his fight with ALS, the emotions came rushing back. I have never had a novel bring me to shuddering tears of sadness, yet also to a true realization of one family's love as this book has. Imagine knowing that you are fading away little by little, that your body is turning on itself and you have no control to stop it. The more you use your body, the faster you fade. Imagine having to cut particular ties with friends (or having you friends cut them for you before they see you die) because your destiny is already set - you will no longer be here. Yet, you have full control of your mental faculties while your physical faculties betray you. That is exactly what this young man is facing, and I cannot imagine what I would do in his place. His slow fade is one of the dominant literary memories of my childhood. Yet, through it all, the reader gains insight in to unconditional love - the love of one's family during the most trying of times. A Time to Love, A Time to Mourn covers the full spectrum of the human existence without losing the reader along the way. This is truly a great undiscovered read.
