This book's purpose is to make you understand the causes and consequences of posttraumatic slave syndrome, this essay will elaborate on a terror management theory (TMT) examination of the low social and psychological well-being of African Americans. Cultural trauma is characterized as a condition that happens when a people's cultural worldview has become so unstable that it is no longer able to fulfill its TMT role of acting as a buffer against everyday worry and uncertainty. The article describes how slavery had a profound traumatizing effect on African Americans that was passed down through consecutive generations, explaining why they now have anxiety-related disorders, poor health, and maladaptive behaviors. To support the application of a model of cultural trauma for understanding the current predicament of African Americans, findings from health and justice studies as well as qualitative data from African American narratives are given.
