great collection of stories

Ms. Prinsen has orchestrated a collection of stories from Minnesota that make a reader feel like the people of the area are sitting in your own home, telling their stories to you personally over a warm cup of coffee. The photographs selected are a delight, the voices in the collection forthright and true. The spirit of the book is a wonderful reminder of all that we may love about our communities--the sense of neighborliness, friendship and humor, the way we all share our stories. It is a collection to treasure.

A Collection, An Editor, A Masterpiece

The power of this collection emanates beyond the rural world of Southeastern Minnesota: these are true stories (in the best sense) told in true language (also in the best sense). Ms. Prinsen deserves especial praise for her careful selection of the individual pieces; her choices were clearly guided by a nice eye--and a nice ear!--evidence of the possession of both of which are likewise manifest in her own story, "Mr. Russell" which, like so many of the pieces in _A Teacher, A Rooster, and an Outhouse_ is charming without being cloying, memorable without being sentimental. But this book. Read it. Pass it on.

Just the book we need...

...during this time of uncertainty in the world. While the authors represented in this book are all from an area in southeastern Minnesota, and many of them are not experienced writers, their stories have a universal quality. You'll laugh and cry at these stories--chosen from a Story Project conducted in the area. A lot of the stories are "historical" while others are contemporary. To know more about this part of the world, or just for some pleasurable reading, buy this book.
