After eating at Mrs. Doshi's restaurant in San Francisco (which was sadly sold and then shut down), I hunted down a used copy of this marvellous cookbook. I consider myself a connoisseur of Indian food, and I must say that this is the best Indian cookbook that I have come across. It is a shame that it is out of print.I have heard that Mrs. Doshi will shortly be publishing a second, vegetarian cookbook that draws inspiration from her fabulous work at her restaurant.
One of the best.....

Recently, I have been forced to drastically alter my diet due to high cholesterol. A friend from the San Francisco area loaned me this book in an effort to help me maintain a healthier diet. At first, I was skeptical. Accustomed to four course business lunches and dinners, I didn't think I would enjoy vegetarian Indian meals. How wrong I was. The dishes taste superb and the directions very easy to follow. With my wife, we have even entertained business associates from India and they too have been impressed. With its emphasis on fresh, low fat ingredients, this book has made staying on my diet a breeze. Even though I still enjoy a nice steak once in a blue moon, rice and daals, as well as other recipes from the book, have become staples of my diet. My only concern is, how can I get additional copies and has Ms. Doshi written other cookbooks?

I discovered this book in the local public library and have thumbed through it numerous times. Well written, clear, concise and a MUST for anyone interested in Indian food. The book focuses on Gujarati food (Surti style), has many useful sections and can be used on a daily basis. My one regret is that it is no longer in print.
Excellent reference book for Gujurati (Surti) cooks.

A copy of 'A Surti Touch' was gifted to me by a special cousin of mine who lived in San Francisco for a while and had frequented at the author's restaurant there. She even had my copy signed by the author and that made the gift even more special. This book has been like the bible for me. I am also from the surti community and have found this book an excellent refence text at times when I cannot remember specific ingredients in dishes that I do not cook too often. It is easy to follow and unpretentious and is especially written for Surtis residing in the United States and therefore the recipes list ingredients that may be readily available here. I have shared this book with many family members and friends and have been trying to locate other copies to purchase because I do not want to part with my copy any more. I will be extremely happy when this books becomes available for purchase again.
Great book on the cooking of Western India

Never have I had a book that details so many great recipes. If you want to dazzle your friends with the unusual, this one is it.It starts by describing the spices, ingredients, and techniques involved in most Indian cooking. IF you like South West Asian food, you will find this section invaluable. From there we go to chutneys, snacks, dairy products, rice, bulghur wheat, dahls, and vegetables. There is a section called, "One dish meals", that has enough one dish variants for at least a year. Compliment all of this with a whole detailed section on Indian bread. Any bread you can find in an Indian restaurant is here. And... Ms. Doshi tells you how to make them in your own home. Trust me, they are a lot easier to make than you think.Sweets are not ignored, there is a whole chapter. The classics, and many you may have never heard of, are here. Wash it all down with a Lassi, or other Indian drink. My copy is so well used, I have to keep the pages in a ziplock. The book has long since distintigrated. In college, I used to cook for a living. I have dozens of cookbooks. This is the most used cook book in my kitchenHighly recommended. When you see it, just buy it!
