Dr. Nolen wrote this wonderful short book over 25 years ago, but its wisdom and message are timeless. He cites a series of patients from his rural practice that survived much longer and better than 'conventional wisdom' would have predicted. The bottom line for patients and for health care providers: there is always hope. As a physician, I have been careful to follow this advice for much of my career, knowing that patients need hope to struggle with their disease, and knowing that my understanding of their disease is limited. We've read this work in my Sunday School class, but it does not cite any religious texts or faith. Strongly recommended reading for patients who see no hope and for providers who need to sustain it.
