Very helpful biography

Like everyone else, I knew about Moby Dick and Billy Budd, but Maryanne L. Diorio lists many works of Melville's that are not well known. She explains the history of each book, tells when it was written, when it was published, and gives a short summary of the plot and the list of characters. The section on Moby Dick alone is worth the price. She establishes the theme of each novel and the literary devices used. I knew most of them, but then I hit synecdoche, which, as she explains, means a figure of speech in which the part represents the whole. After readinig this book, I came away with a greater appreciation for the life and works of this literary giant. This is a fascinating introduction to Melville for all ages.
