Book Overview

Bestselling author Treasure E. Blue returns with a gritty against-all-odds urban fairy tale set in the same unforgiving neighborhood as that of his breakout debut novel Harlem Girl Lost. Desire was born on the streets of Harlem-literally. Her mom, a crack-addicted prostitute, delivered her on a bitter winter's night after turning a trick and being brutally beaten by the john. Taken from her mother by the state, Desire grows up unwelcoming foster homes,...

A Shocking Surprise

I was going to rate this one with 5 stars but the following reasons stopped me. 1. The storyline was so drawn out and could have been summarized and shorten. 2. Way out of line that a woman would be dragging the umbilical cord even while drugged out. 3. The story line said that a woman named Tiah was found dead at a crack house and later Tiah appeared at the hospital to see Desire. Beyond that, the author kept the story moving along with the sad demise of 3 generations of women who succumbed to drugs and prostitution, but Desire defied the odds and struggle and succeed to overcome. I had never read anything so urban with such a twist. The last 50 pages really brought the novel up to greatness and for that reason I added another star to the rating.

Trouble in the Way

Desire Mitchell's transition into this world was more difficult than most. Her mother, Nika, was an addict out selling her body in the bitter cold in order to gratify her need for drugs. Oblivious that her body was laboring, Desire was literally born on the streets of Harlem. Had it not been for Christian Hattie Mae Evans, Nika and her precious bundle would've frozen to death. Wilding out in the streets as a preteen, Desire is bouncing from one rotten foster home to another. She knows not to get too comfortable as she's subject to be removed. Desperate for some kind of kinship, Desire meets another young girl, Tiah, in the same predicament and she looks out for her the way she wished someone would've done with her. Once again Hattie Mae gets the opportunity to open her heart as well as her home taking in Desire as well as Tiah. She offers the girls comfort, safety, as well as love. Introduced to religion at Bethel A.M.E Church, Desire also discovers that she had a powerful singing voice as well as an admirer in the pianist, Carvelas. With so much going right in her life, Desire soon backslides to the perils from her past and the young girl is quickly swept up in the haves and have-nots. When Desire gets another taste of life's cruelty, she sets out to be ruthless in her pursuits. On a fast track to fame, fortune and finally having it all, Desire is kicked down again by life. Will this songstress ever get a chance to sing her praise? I think I may be the only person who has yet to read Harlem Girl Lost. I was worried that reading A Street Girl Named Desire first might dissuade my interest because so many authors fall into a slump after having a hit the first time out. But I can sincerely admit that as an enthusiastic reader, A Street Girl Named Desire was drenched in drama, drugs, vengeance, power, pain, envy, love and hope...all the elements needed to satisfy my hunger for a good read. A Survival Story

Treasure E. Blue is back, and has stepped the game way up. In his newest release, A Street Girl Named Desire, he tells a heart wrenching story of how history has a nasty habit of repeating itself. In this tale the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, and a daughter unknowingly follows the same path as her mother. There were many surprises and twists in this read, and I read it within a day, anxious to see what would happen next. They always say money can't buy you love, and in this read it is laid out plain and clear as to why this statement rings true. I also loved the way Treasure gently reminded you of his last book, Harlem Girl Lost, in a cleaver way without shamelessly plugging his own work. This book deserves a hundred stars, and the ending was powerful. I found myself close to tears, and actually shedding a few on several occaions while reading this book. This is a survival story, one told with the intent to teach a lesson. Treasure, this is a job well done!
