I wanted my characters, Sarah and Michael, to be separated by distance, so the story begins with Sarah in Texas and Michael in South Dakota, where he has gone to find a job in the Homestake gold mine. When they reunite in South Dakota, they find themselves moving further and further apart emotionally. Michael must conquer his fear of the mine and Sarah must decide if she can reconcile herself to Michael's inadequacies.
