Text and illustrations describe the construction of an ancient Roman fort and the lives of the soldiers who manned it in defense of the Empire. This description may be from another edition of this product.
The "Inside Story" series uses buildings and other structures as an entree to exploring history. In the area of ancient history, the series includes books on a Greek Temple, Roman Villa and the Roman Colliseum. Roman history is a vast topic and this approach is a good way to narrow the focus to a discreet topic. Fiona MacDonald is one of the premier writers of historical works for children and she does an admirable job of describing Roman forts and the functions for which they were built. Gerald Woods is a good illustrator and does a decent job of bringing MacDonald's narrative to life. This is a good book that can be purchased used at a decent price. Recommended.
A 6th Grade Social Studies Teacher's Review
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 23 years ago
A great addition to a 6th grade social studies library or a 6th grade student's personal collection. The book has many very detailed and highly interesting illustrations that are suplemented by easily-read descriptive text. This book is age appropriate (11-12 years) and does not contain material that parents would find to be objectionable.
