When a peasent revolt erupts in 1919 Haiti and Caroline Barbour is taken hostage, Lieutenant McAllister and a Black priest penetrate rebel territory to save the woman he loves.
Becker's books are all out of print but if you haven't read him, do. The guy's an intellectual for sure but knows the nuts and bolts of grunt life in the Marine Corps-an odd combination. I've read every book of his I can get my hands on and realize not only does he always have a rip-roaring tale to tell, but he's an authentic wordsmith. Since Haiti's been in the news lately I thought this book was very apropos. While a civilian will enjoy this tale, any person with a military, especially Marine, background will enjoy it even more. I got so jazzed reading it I found another Becker novel, A COVENANT WITH DEATH, that I'm currently reading! Don't let the fact that his novels are all dated prevent you from enjoying this immensely talented writer.
