This is an anthology of first-person accounts of rural life in Edwardian Britain. Recollections from writers such as Alison Uttley, W.H. Hudson, Flora Thompson, Richard Jeffries and Edward Thomas. There are also accounts from people alive today - Hannah Hauxwell, Lord Denning, Dame Barbara Cartland, A.L. Rowse and Viscount Tonypandy - including ordinary folk, who evoke village life, schooldays, the natural world and other themes of county living. Illustrated with paintings from Edith Holden's "Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady", and Edwardian watercolours and photographs, it is a nostalgic celebration of the golden years of country life up to World War I.
I had to read this story for school and I loved it.I had to read the juvenille version though. The story starts out with Tobias and his wife Emma and their son Zech MacIvey in 1858.The story takes place in old Florida way back before everybody started to develop the land. The story ends in 1968 with Zech and Glenda's son Sol.The MacIveys learn how to catch and sell cattle for gold dubloons and meet some pretty interesting people. They see lots of things too.I really liked this book and it was adventurous. The only thing I would recommend having at your side whilr reading this book is a box of tissues because it has some very sad parts. But it is still a good book.I hope you will read it someday
