Nothing like it

The author is well known for his numerous writings for electronic hobbyists in books and magazine columns. This book follows the pattern with adequate presentation of theory, well-designed circuits and clear explanations of devices presented. If you are interested in experimenting with non-coherent (non-laser) light sources as communication devices, here is a good place to start, although once you learn a bit of theory you will want something more advanced. This book is aimed at the competent hobbyist with the means and ability to construct simple electronic devices and conduct experiments. It might be suitable for a club or a classroom or be useful to motivate bright but directionless students. Topics covered; o Historical material and modern applications. o Light sources: lasers, LEDs etc, the physics behind them and how this is applied in practice. o Some free-space optical theory, lenses etc. o Optical fibre o Optical communications circuits. These are all simple analogue circuits mostly using pulse modulation but they can be used immediately to construct working systems. o Optical communication systems design methods. This book will allow you to sit down and design and construct a working point-to-point non-coherent optical communication system using either fibre or free-space links. Having done that, you should then move on to more advanced methods, but there is no one book for that.
